Mayo Clinic recently released a YouTube video about Cochlear Implants (CI). I found it very interesting and wanted to share it with this group. The video (only about 10 minutes long) talks about who can benefit most from a CI and what the surgery is like. What I found most interesting was that this procedure is most helpful for people who have a hard time hearing when there is background noise. Cochlear Implantation involves the surgical placement of an electrode array into the cochlea of the inner ear to provide direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are different from hearing aids. While hearing aids amplify sounds to facilitate sound detection by impaired ear structures, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
