Adult cochlear implants: Mayo Clinic Radio

Mayo Clinic recently released a YouTube video about Cochlear Implants (CI). I found it very interesting and wanted to share it with this group. The video (only about 10 minutes long) talks about who can benefit most from a CI and what the surgery is like. What I found most interesting was that this procedure is most helpful for people who have a hard time hearing when there is background noise. What Is A Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear Implantation involves the surgical placement of an electrode array into the cochlea of the inner ear to provide direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are different from hearing aids. While hearing aids amplify sounds to facilitate sound detection by impaired ear structures, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. This type of stimulation improves clarity and speech understanding. Please CLICK on the following link: What Is A Cochlear Implant?

Leo Tolstoy said that “music is the shorthand of emotion.” Listening to music is a universal experience that requires no shared understanding of words or language, and it can stimulate a full range of emotions such as joy, sadness, fear, excitement, and nostalgia. When choosing a cochlear implant (CI), the first concern is how well it delivers speech sounds. Please CLICK on the following link: Choosing A Cochlear Implant

Why I wish I had gotten cochlear implants sooner

I received my first cochlear implant (CI) in 2013 in my left ear and in 2018 in my right ear. But I wish I had gotten them sooner. I learned that this is a feeling shared by most people with CIs. When I asked why they waited, they said it was because all the unknowns of a CI overwhelmed them when making this decision. Please CLICK on the following link: My Wish
